ATO EV home charging rate
If you have an eligible zero-emissions EV (for example under a novated lease or FBT arrangement), the ATO lets you work out home-charging electricity costs with a cents-per-km rate instead of actual costs: 4.20 c/km for FBT or income years from 2022-23 up to 2025-26, and 5.47 c/km for FBT years starting on or after 1 April 2026 and income years starting on or after 1 July 2026. You multiply the rate by the total relevant km from odometer records. It only covers home charging, not commercial chargers, and it doesn't apply to plug-in hybrids, which use a separate method.

FAQ
Where do I find my kWh charged?
Most EV apps and smart chargers show the energy added. You can also estimate it from km driven and your car's efficiency in kWh/100km.
What efficiency should I use?
Many EVs use around 14 to 20 kWh/100km. Charging losses add about 10%, so a slightly higher figure gives a more realistic home cost.
Is solar charging free?
Not quite. Each kWh you put in the car is a kWh you don't export, so the real cost is the feed-in tariff you give up.
Can I use the ATO rate for any EV?
No. It's for zero-emissions EVs charged at home where you or your employer rely on PCG 2024/2. Plug-in hybrids use a different method, and you need odometer records.
Does this include public charging?
No. This page is for home charging only. Commercial charging is a separate, actual cost.
