FAQ
What does the 70c rate cover?
It covers energy (electricity and gas), phone and internet, stationery and computer consumables. You can't claim those separately on top of the fixed rate.
What can I still claim separately?
The decline in value of equipment and furniture (like a laptop or desk), and repairs to them, can be claimed on top of the fixed rate.
What records do I need?
A record of the actual hours you worked from home for the whole year (for example timesheets, a roster or a diary), plus at least one bill for each running expense the rate covers, such as an electricity or phone bill.
Do I need a dedicated home office?
No. You need to be working from home while carrying out your job, not just doing minor tasks like checking email.
Is the fixed rate always better?
Not always. The actual cost method can give more if your costs are high, but it needs detailed records. Compare both before you lodge.
